Tascam X8 Review From A Non-Audio Person’s Point of View

The Tascam X8 is the audio recorder that I’ve been waiting for. I’m not an audio person, but I do appreciate good, high-quality audio.

As a non-audio person, I’m not qualified to do a deep-dive review into this recorder, but I ordered this as soon as it came out and have been using it on everything I’ve shot since. This is a non-technical review of the things I like about the recorder and some that I don’t like.

Tascam X8 Pros

  • 32-bit float recording, cheap insurance

  • Big, easy to use screen and controls

  • Size, it fits in my bag

  • Plenty of recording options, top mics, lots of xlr inputs

  • Turns on quickly

  • Uses SD cards, I wish they were Full size SD cards though

  • The microphones on top are great and easy to adjust

  • USBC Powering

  • Good battery life with AA’s

  • Can monitor your audio with headphones

Tascam X8 Cons

  • The price

  • The learning curve behind this device, but easy to understand

  • MicroSD instead of full size SD cards

  • The mics on top feel cheap

  • Larger file sizes but worth the extra size
